Among five high-society beauties, the mafia boss chose the waitress bleeding on the marble floor

Part 2: “Nora, sir. Nora Hayes. She’s temporary. She won’t be back.”

“Nora Hayes,” Roman repeated, as if testing the weight of it.

Victoria reached for his arm. “Roman, please. Let me take you upstairs. We can fix this.”

Roman looked down at her fingers on his sleeve.

The air pressure in the room seemed to drop.

Victoria pulled her hand back as if the fabric burned.

“I don’t need you, Victoria,” he said.

Then he removed a champagne-soaked handkerchief from his pocket and dropped it onto the front of her silver gown.

She gasped, but did not protest.

Roman turned his back on all five women. It was not dramatic. It was worse. It was a complete erasure.

He looked down at Nora.

“Get up.”

“I have to clean the glass.”

“Leave it.”

“Gary will charge me for the hazard.”

Roman’s voice dropped. “Leave it.”

Nora left it.

She pushed herself up with the edge of a table, wincing as her ankle protested. Roman saw the wince. He saw everything.

He turned to Gary. “She’s not fired.”

Gary blinked. “Sir?”

“Her shift is over.”

Roman reached into his jacket, pulled out a silver money clip, and counted five crisp hundred-dollar bills onto Gary’s clipboard.

“For the glasses. And her shift.”

Nora stared.
