Nario rested a hand over my shoulder through the white material and left it there for 1 second.
Then he stood.
“Coffee?”
“Always.”
He disappeared into the kitchen.
I sat gradually, stretched my legs beneath the sheet, and looked across the bedroom.
A complete glass wall faced Lake Shore.
The lake was gray-blue beneath thin fog, which softened Chicago’s distant outlines.
I closed Nario’s shirt more tightly around myself.
The cotton retained his scent.
I smiled without a single reason and for many reasons, depending upon the method of counting.
I entered the kitchen barefoot.
Cold from the floor woke the remainder of my body.
Nario stood behind the counter holding 2 cups.
He offered 1 without asking.
“Black.”
I accepted it.
“You were paying attention yesterday.”
“I pay attention to everything concerning you.”
The coffee tasted exactly as it did at home, although the beans were richer and left the correct bitterness at the back of the tongue.
I looked over the cup and discovered Nario watching again, as though verifying that I had remained.
“I will not disappear when you look away.”
He swallowed a laugh and did not entirely conceal it.
“I will risk continuing to look.”
A service entrance clicked.
Viko appeared carrying a leather folder beneath 1 arm.
His suit was impeccable even at that hour.
His concentrated expression belonged to someone arriving early to repair the world.
He began speaking before seeing us.
“Boss, Salvo requested that I bring this because—”
He stopped at the kitchen counter.
His attention crossed me wearing Nario’s loose shirt, my bare legs, the cup inside my hand, and Nario beside me with his collar open and no urgency about visitors.
Viko blinked once.
He rotated slowly and faced the opposite direction with the solemnity of a ceremonial guard.
“Boss.”
His back remained toward us.
“With all respect, advance warning would be appreciated next time.”
Nario nearly choked on his coffee.
I raised my cup to conceal my laughter.
Viko remained motionless, holding the folder while choosing to believe the scene had not occurred.
“Leave it over the living-room table.”
Nario attempted to preserve a steady voice.
“Then have coffee inside another part of the apartment.”
“With your permission.”
Viko departed with his dignity intact, like a man who had discovered the Pope wearing sleep clothes and declined to comment.
I rested my forehead against Nario’s shoulder to contain my laughter.
He placed his chin over my head.
His own restrained laughter moved gradually through his chest.
“This will become a household story.”
“It already has.”
After coffee, Nario seated me on the living-room sofa and collected the folder Viko had delivered.
His face altered.
It did not become hard in the old way, but the morning acquired a seriousness it had not previously contained.
He placed the folder over my lap without opening it.
“Before this, I want you to hear the information from me.”
I touched his elbow.
“Tell me.”
“Aldo Masari has been observed near the Ashcraft 3 times during the previous week.”
Nario chose every word.
“After Briany left the private room yesterday, she did not return home.”
His jaw tightened.
“She met someone inside a restaurant outside her usual world.”
Nario continued.
“My people could not identify the individual.”
“The vehicle parked beside hers carried Masari plates.”
Coffee moved incorrectly inside my throat.
I held the sofa’s rough wool beneath my fingers because I needed something solid.
“She sent a message from across my street last night.”
I looked toward him.
“I saw a notification after entering the building.”
“I did not open it.”
Nario’s expression hardened at the exact place it always hardened before a serious decision.
A line appeared through his jaw like warning.
“Nola—”
“Nario.”
I looked directly at him.
“I can handle this.”
“According to your method or mine?”
“According to what I need.”
He remained silent.
His jaw closed, released, and closed again.
For the 1st time during our short history, I watched him choose listening before action.
“Explain.”
“I want evidence.”
My breathing became slow and deliberate.
“Not revenge.”
I continued.
“If you kill someone now, Aldo receives a martyr.”
“Briany receives proof that we are exactly what she says.”
I held Nario’s gaze.
“If you arrest him, expose him, or turn over evidence, they lose that argument.”
My voice lowered.
“I do not want to become the woman whose presence forces you to become something you no longer want to be.”
Nario looked at me for a length of time morning could not measure.
“Do you understand that no one has ever addressed me this way?”
“I do.”
“Do you understand that I could become angry?”
“I understand that too.”
Nario moved 1 hand to the back of my neck and rested his forehead against mine.
His eyes closed.
The resistance inside his shoulders loosened enough for me to feel it.
“All right, Nola.”
It was the 1st time in many years that he yielded.
At noon, we entered Salvo Corti’s office.
It occupied an entire floor inside an expensive Loop building.
Dark wooden shelves surrounded old lamps casting yellow light.
Sweet cigar smoke had entered the walls and the fabric of the armchairs.
Salvo was thin and wore a carefully pressed gray suit.
His heavy eyebrows moved with such precision that I understood he used them in place of speech whenever possible.
One rose when I entered behind Nario.
“Boss.”
Then he looked toward me.
“Ma’am.”
“Nola.”
Salvo nearly laughed.
I liked him immediately.
Nario sat inside the armchair opposite the desk.
He rested both elbows over his knees with the composure of someone who did not require the chair of authority in order to control a room.
“From today, every decision concerning Nola or her mother passes through her before it reaches me.”
Salvo raised the other eyebrow.
Both remained elevated for 3 complete seconds.
It was apparently his version of astonishment.
“You are asking me to place this inside the internal protocol.”
“I am.”
Salvo’s mouth nearly changed.
“Boss, you are smiling again.”
He looked troubled.
“It frightens me.”
“Formalize it, Salvo.”
The consigliere opened a leather-bound notebook and wrote with the small, precise hand of someone who learned penmanship when writing remained serious.
Then he looked toward me.
“I will treat you as part of this office.”
His voice became formal.
“Viko will provide a telephone number.”
“It reaches this room 24 hours a day.”
“Thank you.”
Viko leaned near the entrance with both arms crossed.
He nodded without looking toward Nario.
He was apparently still recovering from the kitchen.
We left beneath late-afternoon sunlight.
Orange light cut diagonally across Loop buildings and stretched shadows along the pavement.
Nario drove himself.
One hand remained on the wheel.
The other rested over my knee with the naturalness of someone who had done it 1,000 times.
We crossed Chicago with little conversation.
He stopped at the Ashcraft.
Not the service entrance.
The main doors.
I remained inside the marble lobby.
“Nario.”
“Come.”
“I work here.”
“Not today.”
He pressed the control for the panoramic elevator.
It traveled only to the rooftop.
I had entered it once while helping arrange a party that did not belong to me.
I carried boxes and did not stop to see the view.
The entrance opened quietly.
We rose without speaking.
Beyond the glass, Chicago became smaller.
Vehicles changed into points.
The lake opened like an immense gray mirror.
I gripped Nario’s hand without permission.
The rooftop was empty except for us, the wind, and the city moving toward night.
Nario walked toward the edge with the slow pace of someone in no hurry to reach anything.
I followed.
He rested his elbows against the concrete parapet and watched the sky change toward purple.
“This is where I saw you for the 1st time.”
I turned.
“You were walking past on a Friday morning several weeks before the gala.”
Nario’s eyes remained over the city.
“You were checking a list with Adler.”
“You carried a sandwich Mars had given you.”
He paused.
“I came here for a meeting with the manager.”
“You did not see me.”
His attention moved toward me.
“I saw you.”
“You never told me.”
“I could not.”
“Why?”
“I was still the man who did not say those things.”
I rested my own elbows over the parapet.
Wind from the lake carried cold water and the dry scent of evening.
A stillness entered me that I had not known existed.
“I do not understand how to make beautiful promises.”
Nario watched the city.
“I never learned.”
His voice remained low.
“I know how to keep one.”
He turned toward me.
“No one will look down on you while I remain standing.”
I placed my hand over his on the parapet.
His fingers closed around mine with quiet firmness.
“Do not look down on me either.”
Nario laughed.
It was the 2nd time in years, and I was already counting the occasions as though they were rare objects to preserve.
We stayed without speaking.
The sun disappeared behind buildings on the lake’s opposite side.
Chicago’s lights began appearing individually, as though distant hands opened windows.
I rested my head against Nario’s shoulder.
He placed his face over my hair.

My mother still slept inside a small Pilsen apartment.
The Ashcraft’s rear entrance remained the place where I ordinarily entered.
None of those facts had disappeared.
What changed was that I had begun choosing which doors I crossed, which hands I accepted, and which dangers belonged to me.
Nario’s hand remained around mine.
He made no claim over it.
He held it because I had placed it there.
Below us, the city continued without knowing anything had changed.
