Arthur walked into that hospital room slowly, his eyes moving from my swollen cheek, to the crying baby in my arms, to the water spreading under the bassinet. My mother came straight to me, both hands gentle as she brushed my hair off my forehead and whispered, “Sweetheart, don’t move. We’ve got you.”

Beatrice tried to scoff. “Oh, wonderful. The enablers are here.”
