She Saved a Boy From the Rain and Had No Idea His Father Owned the City

Part 2: His voice was low, but it struck the room like a gunshot.

The charge nurse swallowed. “Sir, you can’t just—”

“My son,” he said.

Ruby’s breath caught.

The charge nurse went pale. “Trauma One. Dr. Evans is with him. He’s stable for now, Mr. Moretti.”

Moretti.

Ruby knew that name.

Everyone in Seattle knew that name, even if no one said it too loudly. The Moretti family owned construction companies, shipping warehouses, security firms, restaurants, unions, politicians, and, according to rumors, half the illegal money moving through the city after midnight.

Dante Moretti turned his head.

“Who brought him in?”

The nurse pointed.

Ruby stood before she could convince herself not to.

Dante crossed the room toward her. His men shifted with him. One had a scar through his eyebrow. Another kept his hand near his jacket.

Dante stopped two feet away.

He looked at her diner uniform, her wet sneakers, the mud on her hands.

“You found my son?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“In the alley behind the Rusty Anchor. He was unconscious in the rain.”
