she saw the quiet boy from high school at her friend’s wedding and had no idea he had spent ten years waiting for this night

Part 2: “The timing.”

He tilted his head. “Maybe I requested a slow song.”

She laughed. “You’ve changed a lot.”

“Yeah?”

“You used to look like you wanted the floor to swallow you at school dances.”

“That’s because I did.”

She smiled, but his expression had gone serious in a way that made her pulse jump.

“I took dance lessons,” he said.

“You what?”

“I know. It sounds ridiculous. But business events are full of people who think they’re impressive, and I got tired of feeling awkward in rooms I had to be in.”

Emma blinked up at him. “The Ethan I knew skipped every dance.”

“The Ethan you knew was a coward.”

There was no self-pity in the way he said it, only blunt honesty. Then his gaze held hers, and his voice dropped just enough that she leaned in without thinking.

“Some things didn’t change, though.”

“Like what?”

He was quiet for a beat.

“Like the fact that I thought about you,” he said. “A lot. For years.”
