The Billionaire Lifted His Coffee to His Lips Until a Little Boy Whispered Four Words That Saved His Life

Part 2: Edward could have lied. Most adults would have. He looked at the boy who had climbed four flights to save him and decided the boy had earned more than comfort.

“I think so,” Edward said.

Marcus absorbed that quietly.

“My mom says people don’t hide their hands when they’re doing something allowed.”

Edward let out a breath that was almost a laugh and almost pain.

“Your mother sounds wise.”

“She is.”

Two knocks came at the door. A pause. One more knock.

Edward opened it.

Howard Brennan entered without a word. He was broad-shouldered, silver-haired, and calm in the way of men who had made peace with danger long ago. His eyes moved from Edward to Marcus to the untouched coffee.

He did not ask foolish questions.

Edward explained in three minutes. Howard listened, then took a pair of gloves and an evidence bag from inside his jacket.

“You carry evidence bags?” Marcus asked before he could stop himself.

Howard looked at him seriously. “Always.”

“Why?”

“Because people remember things wrong when they panic. Evidence does not panic.”

Marcus nodded as if that made perfect sense.

Howard sealed the cup carefully.

“I need this to a private lab. No one in this building hears a word yet.” He looked at Marcus. “Your mother’s name?”
