The day he came home early, he heard his mother tell his pregnant wife the baby would never carry his name

Part 2: Victoria smiled without warmth. “Another lawyer who smells money when he sees a convenient pregnancy.”

Grace picked up her purse from the sofa. Her hands trembled, but her eyes were clear.

“He was my mother’s lawyer.”

Michael moved toward her. “Grace, wait. We need to talk.”

She gave a small, joyless laugh. “We needed to talk when I told you I was unhappy here and you said my insecurity would pass.”

Victoria stepped in at once. “If she walks out that door, Michael, do not chase her. Sometimes a woman shows you who she is when she loses control of the stage.”

Grace looked at her mother-in-law.

“No, Victoria. Sometimes a woman leaves because she finally understands that staying is another way to lose herself.”

Michael reached her before she crossed the threshold. He touched her arm but did not hold it.

“I didn’t know,” he said, and hated himself the moment the words left his mouth.

Grace looked down at his hand.

“I know.”
