The mafia boss thought his newborn was dead until a poor girl from the night shift did the impossible

Part 2: She should have lied. She should have walked away.

Instead she said, “Serena Hayes.”

Something flickered in Vincent’s eyes.

Not recognition. Not yet.

But enough for him to remember the name.

And somewhere deep in the back of his mind, while his son lay breathing in the warmth of the incubator and Serena stood trembling in her worn shoes, an old file began to stir like a buried wound.

By morning, the hospital had turned the baby’s survival into a miracle story, but nobody knew how close Lucas Corsetti had come to slipping away for good.

Vincent knew.

And Serena did not leave the building before he found her.

She was in the staff break room, staring at a vending machine that had eaten her last dollar, when the door opened and two men in black suits stepped aside for him.

Vincent filled the doorway like a storm cloud in a tailored coat.

“You’re coming with me,” he said.

Serena laughed once, short and dry. “That’s not how this works.”

“It is today.”

She folded her arms. “Your son’s alive. That should be enough for you.”

“It isn’t.”

His voice was quieter now, but that made it worse. “He needs monitoring. So do you.”

“I’m not his nurse.”
