Part 2: Dominic exhaled like he’d been underwater for miles. He folded her into his chest, careful and fierce at the same time.

“You scared the hell out of me,” he whispered.

“I wanted to see the real world,” she said weakly.

He closed his eyes, holding her tighter. “You are never doing that again.”

Behind him, one of the men barked into a phone, calling for a medical team. Another was already ordering the alley checked, the street watched, the route cleared.

Dominic finally turned to Elena.

The temperature in the alley seemed to drop another ten degrees.

“You,” he said.

She stood too fast and nearly staggered from the cold. “I called because she needed help.”

His stare cut through her like glass. “You stayed.”

Elena lifted her chin. “She was alone.”

For one second, the man in front of her looked almost stunned.

Then the steel returned to his eyes.
