“I also ordered food.”

I leaned my shoulder more fully against his.
“My mother became ill when I was 19.”
My words emerged almost without sound.
“I removed her from the night-cleaning shift on the day she collapsed inside the kitchen.”
I breathed.
“I have never slept inside anyone else’s bed.”
“There was no one offering one.”
I watched the lights.
“I also feared no longer being able to hear her call from the next room.”
Nario turned.
He rested his forehead against mine as he had at the building entrance.

“It has been years since I allowed anyone to sleep inside my bed.”

“I will not disappear when you look away.”
He swallowed a laugh and did not entirely conceal it.
“I will risk continuing to look.”
A service entrance clicked.
Viko appeared carrying a leather folder beneath 1 arm.

His concentrated expression belonged to someone arriving early to repair the world.
He began speaking before seeing us.
“Boss, Salvo requested that I bring this because—”
He stopped at the kitchen counter.

“With all respect, advance warning would be appreciated next time.”

“Leave it over the living-room table.”

“Then have coffee inside another part of the apartment.”
“With your permission.”

I rested my forehead against Nario’s shoulder to contain my laughter.
He placed his chin over my head.

“It frightens me.”

Then he looked toward me.
“I will treat you as part of this office.”

“Viko will provide a telephone number.”
“It reaches this room 24 hours a day.”
