the waitress went to end a six-week pregnancy, then the ultrasound showed three heartbeats

Part 2: The man looked away.

That was answer enough.

The drive lasted nearly an hour, out of Manhattan, across bridges and highways, into the kind of private New Jersey countryside Vivien had only seen in real estate magazines left behind by rich customers at the diner. Stone walls. Iron gates. Endless lawns behind surveillance cameras.

The SUV turned onto a private road lined with bare winter trees.

At the end of it stood a mansion of glass, gray stone, and old money. It rose above the grounds like a fortress pretending to be a home.

Vivien was escorted inside beneath a chandelier bigger than her entire kitchen.

Marble floors. Tall windows. Oil paintings. Men with earpieces standing at discreet intervals.

She felt very small.

Then he appeared at the top of the stairs.

Adrian.

But not the lonely man from the wedding balcony.

This man was colder. Sharper. Dressed in a charcoal suit, one hand in his pocket, face unreadable as he came down the staircase with the slow certainty of someone who owned everything he touched.

Vivien’s anger found her before her courage did.
