A Seven-Year-Old Asked the CEO for Work Because Her Baby Sister Had Not Eaten and His Answer Made the Whole Lobby Go Silent

Part 2: “Yes,” Elliot said. “Call the café and tell them I need hot water. Then send someone to the pharmacy for infant formula, diapers, and warm clothes. Now.”

Maddie’s eyes narrowed.

“I can pay it back.”

“No.”

“I can.”

“No,” Elliot repeated, gentler. “That is not why I’m doing it.”

Her suspicion deepened, because that made no sense.

The lobby remained silent as if the whole building had become a witness.

Elliot stood and turned toward his chief of staff, Marla Jennings, who had just stepped out of the elevator with a tablet in her hand and a morning full of disasters on her face.

“Marla,” he said. “Conference room B. Warm, private, and no one bothers them.”

Marla took in the child, the baby, the wet shoes, the faded blanket, and the strange stillness around Elliot.

“Of course,” she said.

Maddie did not move.

Elliot looked back down at her. “Your sister can eat upstairs.”

“Do I have to leave after?”

“No.”

“Are you going to call the police?”

“Not because you asked for help.”
