A single mother touched the paralyzed mafia boss once and made Chicago afraid of him again

Part 2: Claire felt fear rise in her throat.

Then she felt something else.

Anger.

She was exhausted. She was broke. She had been kidnapped politely, threatened indirectly, blindfolded, delivered to a mansion, and now a man who could buy and sell her whole life was mocking the only skill keeping her son alive.

“I charge by the hour,” she said. “You can spend it insulting me, or you can let me work.”

The room went silent.

Gabriel’s shoulders tightened near the door.

Sebastian stared at her.

For one long second, Claire wondered if she had just killed herself.

Then the corner of Sebastian’s mouth lifted.

“Courage,” he murmured. “Or stupidity.”

“They look the same from a distance.”

This time, Sebastian almost smiled.

“Leave us,” he said.

Gabriel hesitated.

“Boss.”

“Leave us.”

The heavy door closed.
