At 2 A.M., the Mafia Boss Learned His Ex Was Giving Birth — And Only He Could Save Her

The rain came down over Chicago like the city had been sentenced.

From the thirty-second floor of his penthouse, Victor Kane watched the storm turn the skyline into a drowning maze of neon, glass, and shadow. Lightning cracked open the clouds, white for one violent second, and every building below him flashed like evidence at a crime scene.

He owned half of what he could see.

Clubs on the river. Warehouses near the docks. Judges who took his calls. Politicians who smiled for cameras and trembled behind closed doors. Men with guns. Men with ledgers. Men with blood on their hands and loyalty on their tongues.

Victor Kane had built an empire on fear because fear never lied.

Love did.

His phone vibrated against the marble bar.

Once.

Twice.

He did not move.

Calls at two in the morning meant betrayal, bodies, or business. Sometimes all three. He let it ring a third time before crossing the room, his reflection following him across the rain-streaked glass: broad shoulders, dark hair touched with silver, a face carved by years of command, and eyes that had forgotten how to soften.

Unknown number.

Victor answered without speaking.

“Mr. Kane?”

The voice was female, young, and trembling beneath its practiced professionalism.

“This is Mercy General Hospital. You are listed as the emergency contact for Elena Hart.”

The name went through him like a blade.

Victor’s hand tightened around the phone.

“You have the wrong number.”

“Sir, please don’t hang up.”

Something in her voice stopped him.

“Ms. Hart is in critical labor. There are complications. Severe hemorrhaging. Her blood type is extremely rare. AB negative. We checked every blood bank within two hundred miles because of the storm, but the supply is depleted.”

Victor stared out at the city.

Elena Hart.
