At my sister-in-law’s wedding, my mother-in-law gave my husband’s mistress a seat among the family

Part 2

The last voicemail arrived at 12:17 a.m.

Nathan's voice sounded strained, almost frightened.

“Mara, please answer. Whatever you think is happening, we can talk about it. Just call me back.”

I deleted it without listening twice.

Then I opened the safe.

Inside sat a black leather folder.

A second folder.

And beneath both, a small silver flash drive.

For several seconds, I simply stared.

Then I carefully removed everything and carried it to my desk.

The rain continued tapping softly against the windows of my downtown office while Chicago slept below.

My hands were steady.

That surprised me.

Because somewhere between seeing Brooke seated beside my mother-in-law and watching Nathan's eleventh missed call appear on my screen, something fundamental had changed inside me.

The pain was still there.

The humiliation was still there.

But neither one controlled me anymore.

I opened the leather folder.

Inside were copies of documents I had spent nearly eight months collecting.

Bank statements.

Property records.

Corporate filings.

Private investigator reports.

And photographs.

Lots of photographs.

Nathan thought he had hidden his affair well.

He hadn't.

The first photo showed Brooke exiting a luxury hotel in Miami.

Nathan followed thirty seconds later.

The second showed them boarding a yacht together.

The third showed them kissing in a parking garage outside a restaurant Nathan had claimed was hosting a business dinner.

The lies stretched back almost two years.

Two years.

Long enough for betrayal to become routine.

Long enough for everyone around him to become comfortable with it.

Long enough for Eleanor Pierce to start treating Brooke like a daughter.

My phone buzzed.

This time it wasn't Nathan.

It was my attorney.

“Still awake?” he asked.

“I am now.”

“How did the wedding go?”

I laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because it wasn't.

“About as well as you'd expect.”

Silence lingered.

May you like

Then he sighed.

“Are you ready?”
