He Left His Pregnant Wife After One Lie and Five Years Later His Brother Finally Made One Fatal Mistake

Part 2: Marcus lowered his eyes. “A friend of someone I know followed him for another reason. He saw Maya, recognized her from the gala photos, and sent these to me.”

“Who is he, Marcus?”

“I don’t know his name.”

But he did know.

Maya had told Alexander about Daniel Brooks a month earlier. Her cousin from Milwaukee. Her mother’s sister’s son. A commercial photographer passing through Chicago for a two-day shoot. She had asked Alexander if he wanted to join them for lunch, and he had said he couldn’t because of investor meetings.

When Alexander came home with the photos, Maya remembered the lunch immediately.

“That’s Daniel,” she said. “My cousin. You know about Daniel.”

Alexander stood in their bedroom with his coat still on. “He’s touching your hand.”

“Because I was crying.”

His jaw tightened. “Why?”

“Because he told me Aunt Rachel’s cancer came back.”

For a split second, Alexander’s expression changed.

Then suspicion returned, fed by humiliation and fear and his brother’s voice.

“Convenient,” he said.
