He Locked His Wife Outside the Mafia Fortress and Every Boss Inside Chose Her Over Him

Part 2: No heat. No threat. That made it worse.

Vincent placed both hands on the table. “Because the alternative is disorder.”

“The alternative is also what happens when men pretend the person who prevented disorder was decorative,” Mancini said.

Silence.

Vincent turned his head slowly. “Careful.”

Mancini smiled faintly. “I am being careful. That is why I’m saying it plainly.”

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a document. He slid it across the black stone.

“The Lombardi coastal passage clause. Forty-seven words. Who drafted them?”

Vincent glanced down.

He remembered the clause. He remembered the negotiation. He remembered Saraphina spending two weeks on it, taking calls at two in the morning, reviewing translations, changing one word and then changing it back because one Italian phrase carried too much pride and one English equivalent conceded too much power.

“The language was developed by my office,” Vincent said.

“Your office,” Mancini repeated.

He looked toward the closed door, then back at Vincent.

“Your office is standing outside in thirty-degree weather because you locked the gate.”

No one moved.

Outside, the wind cut across the road.
