Her Ex Humiliated Her at the Charity Gala—So She Kissed a Stranger, Then the Room Went Silent When He Revealed He Was Boston’s Mafia Boss

The first thing Elena heard after accepting the biggest award of her career was her ex-fiancé laughing.

Grant Mercer lifted his champagne glass in the packed Boston ballroom and mocked the long nights she had spent uncovering twelve million dollars in fraud. His new girlfriend laughed beside him.

Elena’s fingers tightened around the plaque.

Six months earlier, she had returned Grant’s ring after he threw a wineglass at the wall because she accepted a promotion without his permission. Since then, he had appeared outside her office, beneath her apartment, and at restaurants where she met clients.

Tonight, she finally answered him in front of everyone.

“The investigation required patience, judgment, and the willingness to question powerful people,” she said into the microphone. “Fortunately, I possess all three.”

Grant’s smile vanished.

Minutes later, he cornered her near the ballroom doors and closed his hand around her wrist.

“You need to stop behaving like you have choices,” he whispered.

Elena drove her heel into his shoe, tore free, and escaped through a service corridor.

But his footsteps followed.

There was no exit ahead—only a tall stranger standing near a window, speaking quietly into a phone.

Grant was getting closer.

Elena made the most reckless decision of her life.

She crossed the corridor, grabbed the stranger by his black dinner jacket, whispered, “Please forgive me,” and kissed him.

For one terrifying second, he went completely still.

Then his hand settled against her back.

Grant stopped a few feet away.

The stranger ended the kiss, looked over Elena’s shoulder, and spoke in a voice so calm it made the corridor feel colder.

“She asked you to leave.”

Grant’s face lost all color.

Two men in dark suits appeared behind the stranger.

Then he looked down at Elena and asked, “Do you want him removed?”

Elena stared at the man she had just kissed. He was waiting for her answer—not deciding for her, not speaking over her. Grant was still watching, fury burning beneath his polished smile.

“Yes,” she said.

And the stranger’s security moved.

Grant backed toward the ballroom, muttering that the situation was not finished.

The stranger’s expression barely changed.

“It is tonight.”

Only after Grant disappeared did Elena realize her hands were still gripping the man’s jacket. She released him and apologized, expecting anger.
