Her father married her to a billionaire in a coma, and he opened his eyes only when he heard her voice.

Part 2: “The doctors say a great many things and charge accordingly.”

Vivian’s mouth hardened. “If you like, sit with him.”

Then she left.

Norah stood alone with her new husband for a long moment, listening to the river and the soft tick of the monitor and the sound of her own breathing.

Then, because silence had always frightened her more than work, she pulled the chair close to the bed and sat down.

“I don’t know what your voice sounds like,” she said softly. “That seems unfair considering we’re married.”

No answer.

She looked at the hand resting on the coverlet, fingers slightly curled. He looked like he had reached for something and been interrupted forever.

“I used to clean houses,” she told him. “I still do, technically. This one might be the strangest I’ve ever cleaned.”

The corner of her mouth twitched despite herself.

“Anyway. I’m here now.”

The room remained still.
