I Admitted I’d Never Been Kissed—Then Chicago’s Most Feared Mafia Boss

PART 2

Dante stopped only inches away.

“Dinner,” he repeated. “Tomorrow. Seven o’clock.”

Emma tightened her fingers around the check. “Do people usually say no to you?”

“No.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

His gaze sharpened, but something almost warm flickered beneath it. “No, Emma. They usually don’t.”

She should have refused. Every rumor she had ever heard about Dante Miller pressed against her ribs like warning hands.

Instead, she whispered, “One dinner.”

His smile was slow and dangerous. “One dinner.”

The next evening, a black car arrived outside her apartment. Dante was waiting inside, dressed in charcoal, his bloodstained shirt replaced by a coat that probably cost more than her yearly rent.

He didn’t take her to a crowded restaurant. He brought her to a quiet rooftop greenhouse glowing with candles and winter roses.

“You own this place?” she asked.

“I own the building.”

“Of course you do.”

Dinner was strangely normal. He asked about her mother, her baking, the dreams she had abandoned when money became scarce. He listened without interrupting, as though every word mattered.

Then Emma noticed the scar beneath his cuff.

“What happened?”

Dante’s hand stilled beside his wineglass. “Someone I trusted.”

She expected him to change the subject. Instead, he looked at her with unsettling honesty.

“My father taught me that trust is a weakness.”

“And do you believe him?”

“I did.”
