I AGREED TO PLAY A MAFIA BOSS'S WIFE TO PROTECT MY DAUGHTER—UNTIL HE SHOWED ME THE DEAD WOMAN WITH MY FACE

PART 2

I should have run the second he said he chose me for a reason.

Instead, I sat there with his hand over mine, trying not to panic while every person in that restaurant pretended not to see what was happening.

Then he leaned closer and lowered his voice.

He told me he had seen my face before tonight.

Not my name.

Not my file.

My face.

At first, I thought he meant social media.

Or maybe one of the charity applications I had filled out when Emma’s dental bill got too big to ignore.

But then he said one name that made my stomach turn.

Sophia.

His wife.

His real wife.

The dead wife nobody in the city dared talk about for long.

I laughed because I thought he was lying.

He didn’t laugh back.

He just kept staring at me with that cold, unbearable calm and said I had her eyes, her mouth, even the same way I held my breath when I was afraid.

That was when I finally understood why he had walked straight to my table.

Not because I was convenient.

Not because I was alone.

Because I looked like a woman he had buried six years ago.

I wanted to yank my hand away.
