I drank from my husband’s water bottle at his company and his secretary slapped me in front of everyone

Part 2: I waited.

There are moments in a marriage when everything that came before leans over the edge and waits to see which way one person will push it. This was mine.

Adrian looked at me.

Then at Vanessa.

Then at the watching employees.

“She’s an old family acquaintance,” he said.

Twelve years disappeared inside six cowardly words.

Vanessa moved to his side and placed one possessive hand on his arm. Adrian did not remove it.

“She drank from your bottle,” Vanessa said. “Then she photographed my bracelet.”

My blouse was wet. My cheek burned. My phone held the picture of my stolen anniversary gift.

Still, I gave him one chance.

“Tell her who I am,” I said.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

The employees held their breath.

Vanessa narrowed her eyes.

Adrian chose.

“You are a temporary assistant who should not be on this floor,” he said.

The pain was not sharp. It was clean. Like a glass breaking so completely there was no point trying to save it.

Vanessa smiled.

“Fire her.”

Adrian looked at me, then at his secretary.
