“I HAVE A DATE TONIGHT,” THE MAID SAID—AND THE KOREAN MAFIA BOSS REALIZED SHE WAS THE ONE THING

Part 2: “Someone kind.”

The answer landed harder than she expected.

Daniel’s eyes darkened.

Harper stepped past him toward the door. The cold air slipped in when she opened it, smelling like wet leaves and expensive stone driveways.

Behind her, Daniel said, “Harper.”

She stopped, but did not turn.

“Eleven.”

She left without answering.

Marcus was already waiting outside the Italian restaurant on West Randolph when her rideshare pulled up. He wore a navy blazer and looked relieved when he saw her, as if he had been worried she might not come.

“You look beautiful,” he said.

The compliment was simple. Clean. It didn’t feel like a claim.

“Thank you,” Harper said, smiling. “You look nervous.”

He laughed. “I am. I haven’t been on a real date in six months, and my students would roast me alive if they knew.”
