I Hid Our Baby From a Mafia Boss for 15 Months—Then He Landed a Helicopter on the Hospital Roof

PART 2
Marla Hensley’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.
Dominic Kane did not raise his voice.
He did not have to.
The nurses, guards, parents, and even the police officer near the triage desk all stood frozen as his words settled over the emergency room.
“Who delayed my son’s treatment?”
Dr. Sullivan stepped forward first.
“No treatment has been delayed, Mr. Kane. Your son is being treated now.”
Dominic’s eyes did not leave Marla.
“Then why was his mother threatened with social services while he was burning with fever?”
Marla swallowed.
“I was following procedure.”
“No,” Dominic said softly.
“You were enjoying power.”
My face burned, but I could not look away from him.
Fifteen months had changed him, but not enough.
He was still devastatingly calm when everyone else was afraid.
Still the man who made rooms rearrange themselves around his silence.
Then his gaze dropped to my soaked clothes, my trembling hands, the cheap diaper bag at my feet.
Pain flickered across his face.
“You carried him alone,” he said.
I lifted my chin.
“I protected him.”
“From me?”
“From your world.”
His jaw tightened, but before he could answer, Dr. Sullivan returned from the pediatric unit.
“Noah is responding to treatment, but there is something unusual.”
My lungs stopped.
“What?”
“We ran preliminary blood work. His infection may have been triggered by an exposure, not random illness.”
Dominic went utterly still.
“Exposure to what?”
“We’re waiting on confirmation.”
One of Dominic’s men rushed in, holding my diaper bag in gloved hands.
“We checked the bottle from her apartment.”
My stomach dropped.
“What bottle?”
“The formula container,” the man said.
“It had been opened and resealed.”
I grabbed the wall.
Dominic caught me before I fell.
His touch was firm, careful, furious.
“I didn’t poison my child,” I whispered.
“I know,” he said instantly.
Then his man placed a hospital visitor sticker on the counter.
It had fallen from the lining of my diaper bag.
Marla’s face went white.
The sticker was dated three days earlier.
Name: Evelyn Kane.
May you like
Dominic’s mother.
But she had died before Noah was born.
