I YANKED THE BLANKET OFF A PARALYZED MAFIA BOSS - THEN THE MAN EVERYONE FEARED WHISPERED SOMETHING THAT SHOULD HAVE MADE ME RUN

PART 2

I thought defending him in that room would get me fired.

I did not think it would make his enemies notice me.

The men finally sat down after Desmond spoke, but the air never softened.

It got worse.

Because once they stopped arguing with him, they started watching me.

Not casually.

Not with curiosity.

With the kind of attention that feels like a hand closing around the back of your neck.

I knelt beside his chair and kept stretching his leg like my pulse was not pounding in my throat.

Then I noticed something that made my stomach drop.

Wyatt was not looking at Desmond anymore.

He was looking at the way Desmond’s hand had moved.

Just once.

Barely visible.

But long enough to rest against my shoulder.

It was small.

Too small for anyone decent to make meaning out of it.

Wyatt did anyway.

And the second he smiled, I understood I had just become useful to the wrong man.

The meeting ended without another threat.

That was the part that scared me most.

Men like Wyatt were loud when they wanted power.

They went quiet when they already had a plan.
