My Husband Told Me to Keep Smiling at Dinner—Until the Mafia Boss Behind Us Revealed I Was the Sacrifice He Had Brought to the Table

Part 2: Nathan ordered a bottle without looking at me.

I waited until the waiter left before saying, “You used to ask what I wanted.”

He stared at the white tablecloth. “You always liked red.”

“I liked being asked.”

His mouth tightened, but he did not argue. That frightened me more than the anger would have. Nathan argued about everything: parking tickets, grocery brands, whether my sister was too involved in our marriage. Silence was not his habit. Silence meant fear.

The wine arrived. He drank too quickly, emptied half his glass before I had taken my first sip. I tried to make normal conversation. I asked about his office, about the Henderson account he had complained about last week, about whether he had called the contractor to fix the leak under the sink. He answered in fragments. His eyes kept moving past me, never resting anywhere for long.

Then his phone buzzed again.

This time, the screen lit up before he could turn it over.

I saw only one line, but one line was enough.

Marco: Vale wants the signature tonight. Don’t let her make a scene.

My hand moved before my mind did. I reached across the table and snatched the phone.

Nathan lunged so fast his wineglass toppled, spilling red across the white cloth like a wound. “Claire, give it back.”

I stood, clutching the phone against my chest. “Who is Marco?”

“Lower your voice.”

“Who is Vale?”

His face drained of color. Around us, forks paused halfway to mouths. A woman at the next table pretended not to stare and failed.

Nathan rose halfway from his chair. “This is not the place.”

“No, apparently this is exactly the place. You brought me here. You ordered the wine. You looked like you were being marched to your own funeral all night. So tell me, Nathan. Who wants my signature?”

“Claire.” His voice dropped into a whisper so fierce it barely sounded human. “Be quiet.”

There it was. Not please. Not trust me. Not I’ll explain.

Be quiet.
