My Mafia Husband Chose His Mistress’s Son While I Lost Our Baby—So I Took Off My Ring.

PART 2

Two weeks after our baby died, my husband came home and told me to turn the nursery blue for Bianca’s son.

He said it like he was asking me to move a vase.

Not like he was asking me to erase a grave.

I had just been discharged from the hospital.

My stitches pulled when I climbed the front porch steps.

The Lake Forest house looked the same from the outside—white columns, black shutters, long driveway, American flag moving softly near the garage.

Inside, everything smelled like lemon cleaner and old money.

The kitchen still had the mug I used the morning of the attack.

My prenatal vitamins sat beside the sink.

On the refrigerator was the ultrasound photo Enzo had never bothered to frame.

I stood there looking at it, and my whole body felt far away.

The nursery was upstairs.

I had painted it cream and soft green because I wanted it peaceful.

There was a rocking chair by the window.

A handmade blanket from my aunt in New Jersey.

Tiny socks folded in a drawer.

A silver rattle from my father’s will, engraved with the Romano family crest.

I touched the crib rail and made myself breathe.

Then I packed.

Not dramatically.

Not angrily.

I folded sweaters.

I wrapped my camera.

I took the folder Aaron had couriered over: divorce papers, medical report, police report, traffic camera stills, the deed showing the house was purchased with Romano trust money, and a copy of my father’s will.

That will mattered.

Enzo loved telling people he gave me everything.

The truth was uglier.
