Lily’s mind went briefly, humiliatingly blank.

“I—” She glanced at the door handle, then back at him. “I’m the person who called the Uber.”

He stared.

“You are not.”

“Okay, well, the app said black SUV, and my phone died, so maybe there’s been some kind of—”

His eyes flicked to the rearview mirror.

Something in his face changed.

The SUV lurched forward so violently Lily’s head hit the headrest.

“Hey!” she shouted, grabbing the seat. “What are you doing? Stop the car. I will report you.”

He ignored her.

The tires cut hard across the slick street. Horns blared. Lily twisted around just as another black car slid into view behind them, too close, too fast.
