She posted one mirror selfie to say goodbye, and the most dangerous man in New York was at her door before midnight

Part 2: “Your birthday. You’ll be twenty-eight this year.” He took another step toward her. “You drink Earl Grey tea with too much sugar. You hate lilies because they remind you of funeral homes. You have a younger brother named Ryan at Ohio State studying engineering. You grew up outside Cleveland. Your favorite color is teal, but you almost never wear it because you think it makes you look unprofessional.”

The room tilted.

Anthony’s voice softened. “You touch that silver bracelet when you’re nervous because it belonged to your mother. You arrive fifteen minutes early because being late makes you anxious. You organize documents by date even when I don’t ask. You read romance novels on the subway and pretend you’re reviewing work files.”

Sophia’s hand went to her bracelet.

“How do you know all that?”

“I notice everything about you.”

Her throat tightened.

“Then why did you never say anything?”

“Because noticing you was dangerous,” he said. “Acting on it was worse.”

The silence between them changed. It became heavier, stranger, alive.

Sophia looked away first. “It doesn’t matter.”

“It does.”
