Grant studied her for half a second, then dismissed the moment. He always dismissed what he could not control.

“Right.”

When he left, Evelyn remained still until the elevator doors closed. Then she walked to the sink and vomited.

Afterward, she rinsed her mouth, washed her face, and stood before the mirror.

A stranger looked back.

Not old. Not weak. Not broken.

Awake.

By 8:00 a.m., she had called the Meridian Room.

“Good morning,” a polished voice said. “Meridian Room reservations.”

“I need a table for tonight,” Evelyn said.

“I’m so sorry, ma’am, we’re fully committed for the next several months.”

“I know,” she said. “I need the table beside Grant Hartwell’s reservation.”

Silence.

The kind of silence expensive people bought and staff protected.

“I’m afraid I can’t discuss another guest’s booking.”

“I’m his wife.”
