Then Lorenzo said, “Castellano made a move on one of the Newark terminals. We lost three men.”

“I’m sorry.”

He nodded. “I have to be in Baltimore tomorrow.”

“Okay.”

He looked up then. Really looked.

“You’re quiet,” he said.

“I’m usually quiet.”

“No.” His eyes narrowed. “Different quiet.”

There it was.

The smallest opening.

Vivien placed her fork down.

“Lorenzo, I need—”

His phone rang.

The senior captains’ tone.

She knew it so well she could have identified it in her sleep.

He looked at the screen. Then at her. She watched the calculation move across his face.

“I have to—”
