She Worked as a Maid in the Mafia Boss’s Mansion

Part 2
Evelyn carried the photograph in her apron pocket the rest of the day.
Every step through the mansion felt different now. The marble hallways, the locked doors, the guards who watched without seeming to watch - all of it seemed connected to the faded picture burning against her hip.
The next afternoon, she found Walter alone in the library.
Rain tapped softly against the tall windows. Floor-to-ceiling shelves surrounded him like walls of leather and dust. He stood on a ladder arranging old volumes, but the moment Evelyn entered, his shoulders stiffened.
“I found something yesterday,” she said.
Walter climbed down slowly.
“The photograph,” she continued. “It belonged to my family.”
The old man closed his eyes.
Not in surprise.
In resignation.
“You should not be asking questions about the past.”
“Why?”
“Because some stories never end the way people hope.”
Evelyn stepped closer. “Did you know my parents?”
For several seconds, the only answer was rain against glass.
Then Walter said, “I knew of them.”
It was the first real answer anyone had given her in eighteen years.
“How?”
His eyes drifted to the pendant hidden beneath her uniform. “That necklace belonged to your mother.”
Evelyn froze.
Nobody outside her family should have known that.
Before she could ask more, the library doors opened.
Gabriel Romano entered with a folder in one hand.
The atmosphere changed instantly.
His eyes moved from Walter to Evelyn, then to the tension neither of them could hide. “Am I interrupting something?”
No one answered.
Then his gaze dropped to Evelyn’s apron pocket, where the corner of the old photograph showed above the fabric.
For the first time since she had met him, shock crossed his face.
“Where did you get that?” he asked.
Evelyn pulled the picture free.
Gabriel stepped closer.
“That photograph was supposed to be stored in a private archive.”
Her voice shook. “Why is my family in your archive?”
Gabriel looked at her sharply. “Your family?”
“That is my mother, my father, and me.”
Walter whispered, “Miss Foster—”
The name struck the room like thunder.
Gabriel turned to him. “Foster?”
Evelyn’s heart pounded. She had never given the mansion her real last name when she was hired. Only Evelyn Moore, the name she had used to survive.
Gabriel’s attention returned to her face with frightening intensity. “Your last name is Foster?”
She nodded.
Something flickered in his eyes, distant and troubled, like a memory trying to break through.
Walter seized the silence. “There is a storage room beneath the east wing. Old records. Old belongings.”
Evelyn looked at him. “Will I find answers there?”
Walter’s face tightened. “You may find more than answers.”
That night, with the storm covering the estate in darkness, Evelyn slipped into the east wing and found the hidden staircase.
At the bottom was an archive room filled with boxes.
Her flashlight moved across label after label until it stopped.
Foster.
Inside the box were documents, photographs, a leather journal - and a framed picture covered in dust.
Evelyn wiped the glass clean.
Her entire body went still.
Standing beside her father in the photograph was a younger Walter.
Beside Walter stood a teenage boy with dark hair and serious eyes.
A boy who looked exactly like Gabriel Romano.
Footsteps descended behind her.
Gabriel emerged from the shadows carrying a lantern.
Warm light spread across the archive.
Evelyn stood, holding the photograph like proof and accusation at once.
“You knew my family.”
Gabriel looked at the picture, then at her.
“I knew of them,” he said quietly. “Not the way you think.”
A folded ledger page slipped from the journal and landed between them.
Gabriel picked it up.
The moment he read it, all color left his face.
“What is it?” Evelyn whispered.
He handed it to her.
The record was dated eighteen years earlier.
Beside her father’s name was a meeting scheduled with the Romano family only hours before everything in her life changed.
Every clue led here.
Every secret pointed to this house.

And for the first time, Evelyn wondered if the man standing in front of her was the answer she had been searching for...
Or the danger her father had tried to protect her from.
