Part 2: Daniel nodded and stepped into the office.

Clara was inside at the small desk, doing homework with earbuds in, though Daniel knew she heard everything. She had her mother’s brown hair and Daniel’s steady eyes, and she could read a room faster than most adults. She glanced at Victoria through the interior window, then back at her math worksheet.

“Fancy,” Clara murmured.

“Be nice,” Daniel said.

“I am being nice. I didn’t say scary.”

Daniel fought a smile and ran the card.

When he returned to the bay, Evan was standing beside the old metal shelf near the workbench. He was staring at something hanging from a nail.
