The Court Laughed at the Girl... The Judge Called Her a Little Circus Act

Part 2: Vale’s jaw tightened. “Your Honor, the fraudulent transfers were made with Mr. Albright’s credentials. His username, his password, his security token. The digital record is clear.”

“That was not my question.”

“Physical presence was not necessary,” Vale said. “He could have arranged remote access.”

Elaine seized the opening. “Your Honor, the forensic report the state relied on said the transactions were initiated from the company’s internal network. From Mr. Albright’s physical workstation. I challenged that at trial, but the state argued his credentials were conclusive.”

Judge Cross’s eyes sharpened.

“Mr. Vale,” he said, “was there any hospital alibi in the investigative file?”

Vale spread his hands. “Not to my knowledge.”

“To your knowledge?”

“Your Honor, we are in the sentencing phase. This was tried. The jury heard the evidence. A child’s emotional claim cannot—”

“A child just gave a hospital name, a room number, and a time window,” Judge Cross said. “That is not an emotional claim. That is a verifiable assertion.”

Vale’s confidence flickered for the first time.

Judge Cross looked toward the bailiff. “Deputy Harper, take Miss Albright to the witness waiting room. Get her water. Do not let anyone speak to her without my permission.”

Isabelle’s face went white. “Am I in trouble?”

“No,” Judge Cross said, his voice suddenly softer. “No one is going to humiliate a child in my courtroom.”

Lucas let out a sound that was almost a sob.

Judge Cross raised his gavel.

“This court is in temporary recess. Ms. Lane, Mr. Vale, in chambers. Now. And someone get me Hope Medical Center’s records for the night in question before I decide whether this court has been used as a weapon.”

The gavel fell.

The sound cracked through the courtroom like the first break in a wall that had looked indestructible.

Two hours later, the laughter was gone.

The people who had smirked at Isabelle now sat with their backs straight and their mouths closed. Reporters had multiplied in the hallway. The courthouse security officers whispered into radios. Prosecutor Andrew Vale had stopped smiling entirely.
