The first time Lena Marsh lost her lens cap, she found Matteo Viani instead.

PART 2

He found her the next morning in the service corridor.

She was walking back from the equipment room with a new memory card when she heard his footsteps behind her — unhurried, even, the gait of someone who had never had to wonder if they would be welcomed.

""You dropped this,"" he said.

She turned. He was holding her second lens cap. She looked at it. At him. Back at it.

""I usually don't lose things,"" she said.

""I noticed."" A pause that had something like humor in it. ""You also don't stop moving.""

""I work mornings, afternoons, and evenings in a resort where people constantly need someone to record them being happy.""

""Is that not satisfying?""

""I'm a veterinary student,"" she said. ""In September I start my third year at Edinburgh. Right now I'm paying for it.""
