The mafia boss called his secretary to fire her until her little girl said Mommy can’t get up

Part 2: “My daughter was sick.”

“Mr. Moretti is waiting.”

For a moment, an old hospital fear rose inside Clara, the fear of walking into a room where powerful people had already decided what story they wanted to believe.

But Marcus only opened the door.

Dante Moretti stood by the window with his back to the room. His black shirt was open at the collar, sleeves folded once at his wrists, gold watch catching the morning light.

Valeria Graves sat on the leather couch, elegant in pale blue, legs crossed, hands folded as if posing for a portrait. She looked at Clara and smiled with her mouth, not her eyes.

“You’re late,” Dante said without turning.

“I’m sorry, sir. My daughter had a fever.”

Dante turned then. His eyes moved over Clara’s face, her loose hair, her tired posture. He did not soften, but he did not dismiss her either.

“Is she safe?”

Clara blinked. She had expected anger.

“Yes. With my neighbor.”

“Then work.”

It was not kindness. Not exactly.

But it was not cruelty either.

Clara nodded and went to her desk.
