The Mafia Boss Came Home Early—Then His Maid Grabbed His Arm and Whispered

PART 2

Vincent did not move.

For the first time in thirty years, he let someone else control the silence.

Elena’s hand slipped from his mouth, but her eyes warned him not to speak.

Outside the closet, Marcus ordered the men toward the west wing.

Drawers slammed.

Floorboards creaked.

The house that had once obeyed Vincent now sounded occupied by strangers.

Elena leaned close again.

“Marcus is not looking for your accounts.”

Vincent’s voice was barely air.

“Then what does he want?”

“The red ledger.”

His blood went still.

Only three people had known that name.

One was dead.

One was Vincent.

The third had just betrayed him.

“How do you know about that?”

Elena looked through the crack in the door.

“Because I moved it before they arrived.”

Vincent turned toward her fully now.

The maid was gone.

In her place stood a woman with a steady gun hand, a hidden knife at her thigh, and secrets sharpened by years of silence.

“You have been stealing from me.”

“No,” she whispered.

“I have been keeping you alive.”

Marcus returned to the bedroom, speaking into his phone.

“No, he is not here.

Find Elena before she talks.”

Vincent’s gaze snapped to her.

Elena’s face did not change, but something old moved through her eyes.

Pain.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“You were the target tonight,” she said.

“But I was the reason.”

Vincent heard footsteps approach the closet again.

Elena raised her pistol.

He caught her wrist.

“Not yet.”

She looked at him, startled by the command in his whisper.

Then he reached behind a row of suits and pressed his thumb against a brass hook.

A hidden panel opened without sound.

Inside was a narrow passage Vincent had built after his first assassination attempt.

Elena stared at it.

“You had an exit.”

“I had trust,” he said coldly.

“That was more dangerous.”

They slipped into darkness just as Marcus opened the closet door.

From the passage, Vincent watched his nephew find the empty shadows.

Marcus smiled slowly.

Then he said, “Come out, Uncle.

I know she told you.”

Elena froze.

Vincent felt her pulse hammer beneath his fingers.

Marcus lifted something into view.

A child’s bracelet.

Pink.

Tiny.

May you like

Elena stopped breathing.

Marcus whispered, “Tell him whose daughter she really is.”
