The Mafia Boss Heard His Plus-Size Assistant Whisper Baby and Realized She Was the One Person His Enemies Could Use to Break Him

Part 2: “You were told to take me intact, weren’t you? That makes this harder for you than it is for me.”

Kane reached the hallway as her apartment door burst open.

A man stumbled backward out of it, clutching his face, blood pouring between his fingers. A second man had Amara by the arm. She was barefoot, still in the navy dress she had worn at the office, her hair half-fallen from its clip, a cast-iron skillet in one hand.

Her left cheek was swelling.

Her eyes were furious.

Not frightened.

Furious.

The second man saw Kane and froze.

That was his last useful decision.

Kane crossed the hallway and hit him so hard the man slammed into the opposite wall and dropped.

The first man tried to reach inside his jacket. Owen’s people took him down before his fingers touched metal.

For one second, Kane saw nothing except Amara’s bruised face.

Then a tiny voice came from inside the apartment.

“Aunt Mara?”

Amara turned immediately. “I’m here, baby. Stay where you are.”

Baby.

There it was again.

Kane looked past her into the apartment and saw a little girl peeking out from behind a bathroom door. Six, maybe seven. Brown skin, wide eyes, pink pajamas with tiny moons on them. She clutched a stuffed rabbit so tightly its ears were twisted in her fist.
