The Mafia Boss Left The Poor Waitress To Die In The Snow

Part 2

Greta Novak, the housekeeper, was the first person in that mansion who looked at Maren as if she were still human. She was a strong woman in her fifties with silver hair pinned tightly at her neck and eyes that had seen too much to be surprised by anything. She led Maren down to a small basement room meant for staff and placed folded clothes on the narrow bed.

“You are not the first woman he has brought here,” Greta said quietly. “But if you want to survive, you will listen.”

So Maren listened.

Never enter a room with a closed door. Never repeat anything heard in the hallways. Never look too long at men who carried guns. Never touch papers in Ryker’s study. Never believe kindness in this house came without a hook hidden inside it.

“Why do you stay?” Maren asked.

Greta’s expression tightened. “Everyone stays because of something. Money. Fear. Family. Love. Mr. Falcone never needs iron chains when he can chain people with the person they cannot bear to lose.”

That night, alone in the basement, Maren lay awake beneath thin blankets and understood the shape of her prison. Ryker had not locked her in with bars. He had locked her in with her mother’s heartbeat.

Days became weeks. Maren scrubbed floors, carried trays, and learned the mansion’s rhythms. Ryker’s men treated her like furniture until Dorian tripped her in the dining room and sent plates shattering across the granite. Red wine spread around her knees like blood while the men laughed.

“Clean it up, dish girl,” Dorian sneered.

Maren looked up slowly. “If tripping a woman carrying plates is what makes you feel powerful, you must not have much power to begin with.”

The laughter died.

Dorian raised his hand.

“Enough.”

Ryker stood in the doorway.

He did not comfort Maren. He did not apologize. He merely looked at Dorian until the man lowered his arm and stepped back. But from that day on, no one touched her. Ryker’s attention had become a shield neither of them had asked for.

And that frightened Maren almost as much as his cruelty.
