The Mafia Boss Thought a Million-Dollar Tip Would Make a Broke Waitress Beg...

Part 2: “I don’t care if you’re the mayor, the Pope, or the king of Manhattan.”

A guard made a sound that might have been a cough concealing disbelief.

Roman’s expression hardened. “That money could change your life.”

“Maybe. It could also give you permission to walk back into it whenever you pleased.”

“I require no permission.”

“Exactly.”

She placed the check on the SUV’s polished hood. Rainwater immediately soaked through the heavy paper.

“We’re square.”

Norah walked back toward the diner, her boots splashing through shallow puddles.

The guard nearest Roman shifted uneasily. “Boss, should I—”

“Touch her and you’ll lose the hand.”

The guard became perfectly still.

Roman lifted the ruined check from the hood. Black ink stained his fingertips as the zeros dissolved into meaningless streaks.

Everyone had a price. He had believed that since he was eleven years old, when his father bought the silence of a police officer after leaving a man bleeding in an alley. Roman had built businesses, alliances, and entire political careers around the principle.

Yet Norah Hayes had looked at a million dollars and seen a chain.

For the first time in years, Roman felt something unfamiliar move beneath his ribs.

Not affection.

Not yet.
