THE MAFIA KING WHO SAVED A BROKEN WIFE FROM THE GUTTER AND FORCED HER HUSBAND TO FACE THE PRICE OF BETRAYAL

Part 2:

The car ride back was silent, but not empty. It was heavy in a different way now—like everything unspoken had finally been acknowledged. Adrien didn’t touch me. He didn’t speak for a long time. His hand rested on his knee, controlled, restrained, like he was keeping something inside himself from breaking out.

“You didn’t hesitate,” he finally said.

I stared out the window at the fading city lights. “I’ve hesitated my whole life.”

That made him glance at me.

Slowly.

Carefully.

As if I were something fragile and dangerous at the same time.

“I thought you would protect him,” he said.

“I did,” I replied quietly. “Until I realized I was the thing he was using to hurt people.”

The words lingered.

Adrien’s jaw tightened slightly. “That kind of clarity usually comes with a price.”

“I already paid it,” I said.

That made him go quiet again.

When we reached the mansion, I expected relief.

Instead, I felt something worse.

Awareness.

Of him.

Of everything he represented.

Power. Control. Safety… at a cost I didn’t understand yet.

As I stepped out of the car, Adrien’s voice stopped me.

“Laya.”

I turned.

He studied me for a long moment.

Then—

“You don’t belong to him anymore,” he said. “But you also don’t belong to me.”

My breath caught slightly.

Because something about the way he said it felt like a lie he was trying to believe.

He stepped closer, just enough that I could feel the space between us tighten.

“But I won’t let you fall back into the world that hurt you,” he added.

A promise.

Or a warning.

I didn’t know yet.

Inside the house, Anna was waiting. But even she looked at me differently now—like she understood something had changed permanently.

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

Not because of fear.

Because of him.

Adrien didn’t come to my room.

But I knew he was there.

Somewhere in that house.

Watching.

Guarding.

Waiting.

And when I finally closed my eyes, I realized something terrifying:

May you like

I didn’t know where safety ended…

and him beginning.
