Sheets moved behind her.
Gabriel threw the covers aside.
He did not use the cautious movements of the previous 2 weeks.
He placed both bare feet upon the rug and held the mattress.
His muscles shook.
His chest rose and fell heavily.
Slowly, Gabriel pushed himself upright.
He was far thinner than before.
Scars stood sharply upon his pale torso.
As he rose above the bed, however, his imposing size returned.
Gabriel rolled his shoulders.
A harsh crack sounded through the room.
“Midnight.”
A dark smile touched his mouth.
“He will come at midnight.”
Harper’s voice shook.
“What do we do?”
“The door is locked. Miller is outside.”
“Miller is a lapdog.”
Gabriel took 1 step.
His right leg weakened, but he caught the bedpost.
Then he took another.
He was walking.
Gabriel entered the bathroom.
Harper followed and watched him remove a metal ventilation cover near the ceiling.
He reached inside and withdrew an oilcloth package.
Upon the marble counter, he uncovered a Glock 19, 2 loaded magazines, and a black suppressor.
“You had a gun inside this room.”
“I have one inside every room.”
Gabriel checked the chamber with practiced movement.
The slide closed sharply.
“I am paranoid.”
He attached the suppressor.
“It is why I remain alive.”
His hands were steady.
The tremors had disappeared.
Dante would enter alone.
His ego would require him to perform the final act himself.
He would send Miller farther along the corridor.
“Then you shoot him.”
“If I kill him the moment he enters, half the organization will believe I became unstable and murdered my brother without cause.”
That could divide the family.
Gabriel needed Dante to confess.
He needed an attempted murder while fully conscious.
Gabriel moved closer to Harper.
Heat came from his recovering body.
“I need you to act as bait.”
Harper stopped breathing.
“He will kill me.”
Dante had ordered her gone by midnight.
When he found her beside the bed, he would become distracted.
Gabriel would wait behind the door.
“He will shoot me.”
“He will not use a gun.”
Dante required silence and an apparently natural death.
He would use a syringe or pillow.
“He may seize you, but I will stop him before he causes harm.”
Harper looked toward the Glock.
She remembered Dante’s basement interrogation and his shoe above her face.
The night she spilled the tea, she had stopped being only a maid.
“All right.”
She inhaled gun oil.
“Where do you want me?”

At 11:50 p.m., the master bedroom was completely dark.
Harper had left every lamp unlit.
She stood where Gabriel had instructed her, beside the bed with a damp cloth inside her hand.
Pillows had been arranged beneath the silk duvet to imitate the shape of a sleeping body.
From the entrance, it appeared Gabriel remained beneath the covers.
Gabriel stood flat against the wall behind the mahogany doors with the Glock resting beside him.
Harper could not see him.
She felt his presence inside the darkness.
He was a compressed spring.
A predator waiting within brush.
Her heart moved so rapidly that she feared Dante would hear it from the corridor.
Her hands shook.
Harper held the wooden bedpost to remain upright.
At 11:58 p.m., the door handle turned slowly.
Hallway light crossed the Persian rug.
Harper had oiled the hinges 2 days earlier.
They made no sound.
Dante entered alone.
He closed the door carefully and returned the room to darkness.
His silhouette moved toward the bed.
Something large rested inside his right hand.
It was a down pillow taken from the hallway sofa.
“I told you to leave.”

Harper did not move.

“I was finishing his bath.”
Dante approached.
“You stubborn, stupid girl.”
He dropped the pillow.

Dante reached inside his coat and removed a switchblade.
The blade caught moonlight from the window.
“I will cut your throat.”
Then he would tell Miller that Harper attacked Gabriel and Dante acted in defense of his brother.
He lunged.
Harper screamed and moved backward.
Her feet tangled.
She struck the floor and scrambled against the nightstand.
Dante raised the knife.
“Dante.”
The voice came from behind him.
It was not the broken sound Dante knew from the bed.
It was Gabriel’s deep baritone.
The voice of the boss.
Dante stopped and turned.
Harper reached upward and switched on the bedside lamp.
Light flooded the room.
Gabriel stood near the door.
He was barefoot and wore dark trousers with a white undershirt.
He looked terrifying.
The sickroom pallor had disappeared beneath cold murderous fury.
The Glock remained aimed at the center of Dante’s chest.
Color left Dante’s face.
The switchblade fell and struck the floor.
“Gabriel.”
His eyes moved toward the false body upon the mattress and returned to his brother.
He could not understand the calculation.
“How?”
“A heavy-metal cleanse.”
Gabriel moved forward.
“It is painful, little brother, but it clears the mind.”
Dante raised both hands and retreated.
He told Gabriel to wait.
The doctors had said infection produced hallucinations.
“Be quiet.”
Gabriel did not shout.
The command’s softness was worse.
He walked toward the center of the room without lowering the gun.
“You gave me thallium for 1 month.”
Gabriel accused Dante of watching him waste away while holding his hand as his nervous system burned.
“It was not me.”
Dante’s composure disappeared.
He blamed rival families, particularly the Bertinellis, and claimed they had entered the kitchen.
“Harper.”
Gabriel did not look away from Dante.
“Bring the bag.”
Harper forced herself upright.
She moved beneath the leather chair and reached under the dresser.
The duct tape tore free.
She carried the garbage bags toward Gabriel.
He indicated Dante with the barrel.
“Open it.”
Harper untied the plastic.
Bitter almonds and stale ginger immediately entered the room.
The section of Persian rug remained damp and dark with poisoned tea.
Dante looked toward it.
His throat moved.
He knew what it contained.
“A botanical mixture.”
Gabriel’s voice lowered.
“Almond-heavy to conceal the poison.”
Dante had stirred it personally every morning.
Gabriel moved close enough to press the suppressor against his brother’s forehead.
Dante’s knees weakened.
Gabriel seized his lapels and held him upright.
“I will offer a choice.”
Dante could scream for Miller.
If the guard entered, Gabriel would shoot Dante’s knees, kill Miller, and spend 3 days removing Dante’s skin inside the basement.
Real tears crossed Dante’s face.
He begged Gabriel and reminded him that they shared blood.
“Or you may eat it.”
Gabriel indicated the bag.
Dante was to kneel, place his mouth upon the wool, remove every remaining drop of tea, and swallow it.
“We will see how long your plateau lasts.”
Dante looked toward the bag and then the gun.
Inside Gabriel’s eyes, he found only a graveyard.
Slowly, Dante lowered himself.
He moved toward Harper upon his knees.
She stood frozen with the plastic open.
Dante looked upward.
Nothing remained of his arrogance.
Only animal terror.
He pressed his face into the damp wool.
Dante gagged and coughed.
With the suppressor inches from his head, he drew the bitter moisture from the rug.
Harper turned toward the wall.
She listened to wet, suffocating sounds as Dante consumed his own attempted murder weapon.
When it ended, he collapsed and coughed fibers from his mouth.
Gabriel lowered the Glock.
He examined his brother with empty disgust.
“Miller.”
The shout carried beyond the doors.
Miller entered with 1 hand upon his holster.
He stopped.
Gabriel stood armed and upright.
Dante remained upon the floor, crying and vomiting.
Harper still held the bag.
Miller removed his hand slowly.
He was a survivor and understood immediately that authority had shifted back.
“Boss.”
“My brother is ill.”
Gabriel turned away from Dante.
“He has consumed something toxic.”
Miller was to take him to the basement and lock the door.
No physician was to be summoned.
No water was to be provided.
“If he dies, place him inside a tarp and bury him in the north woods.”
“Yes, boss.”
Miller seized Dante by the collar and pulled him from the room.
Dante did not resist.
The thallium had entered his empty stomach.
The door closed.
Silence returned.
It no longer felt oppressive.
It felt clean.
Gabriel placed the weapon upon the nightstand.
He leaned against the bedpost and released a long breath.
Harper dropped the plastic bag.
Lint and the odor of almonds covered her hands.
Her body shook.
Gabriel removed a thick bundle of $100 bills held by a rubber band and threw it upon the mattress.
“Three months of rent.”
He added a bonus for Harper’s performance.
She looked toward the money.

Harper raised her eyes.
The injury upon her face continued to ache.
Blood had dried inside her apron.
“You told Dante to dismiss me.”
Gabriel approached until approximately 1 foot separated them.
He did not touch her.
His presence still pulled heavily at the room.
“I did.”
“You are no longer a maid.”
Harper’s voice became quiet.
“Then what am I?”
Gabriel studied the uninjured side of her face, the line of her jaw, and the pulse within her throat.
It was not gratitude.
It was complete, unapologetic possession.
“You are the only person inside this city I trust.”
Gabriel told Harper to wash her hands.
She would eat dinner with him the following evening.
Harper looked again at the money.
Then she looked at the king of the syndicate standing within the remains of his sick room.
She had saved a monster.
Saving a monster eventually required learning how to live beside him inside the dark.
“All right.”
Harper entered the bathroom and began washing poison from her hands.
