The man who grabbed his pregnant ex by the throat had no idea her husband owned every shadow in the city

Part 2: “Decaf Americano,” Norah said. “Black.”

She turned toward the window while she waited. Across the street, Leo stood near a lamppost, scanning the block. She felt guilty and comforted all at once.

Then a voice behind her said, “Norah?”

Her whole body went cold.

Some voices do not arrive through the ears. They enter through scars.

Norah did not turn immediately. If she did not look, maybe he would remain a ghost.

“I thought that was you,” Derek said. “You still stand like that. Shoulders tight. Like you’re waiting for somebody to hit you.”

Slowly, she turned.

Derek O’Malley stood near the condiment station.

Five years ago, he had been handsome in a sharp, reckless way. He had known how to smile like a promise. He had known how to apologize with flowers after putting his hand through a wall. He had known how to make every cruel thing sound like her fault.

Now he looked hollowed out. His hair was greasy, his shirt wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot and restless. He smelled like stale gin and failure.

“Derek,” she said.

His gaze crawled over her coat, her boots, the diamond studs in her ears. Then his eyes landed on the ring on her left hand.

His mouth tightened.

“Look at you,” he said. “Playing rich.”

The barista slid her coffee onto the counter. “Decaf Americano.”
