The Millionaire Stopped Walking When a Crying Mother Told Her Little Boy They Had No New Year Left

Part 2: His gaze shifted to Noah, who peeked around Hannah’s coat with wide, tired eyes.

Daniel swallowed before answering.

“Because I watched your son wipe your tears,” he said. “And I remembered the last time someone wiped mine.”

The city noise seemed to dim for half a second.

Hannah hated that his answer sounded real.

Noah stepped out a little. “Did your mom cry too?”

Daniel’s mouth tightened with pain. “My wife did. A long time ago.”

“Where is she?”

Hannah whispered, “Noah.”

But Daniel answered him.

“She passed away.”

Noah’s face changed. “I’m sorry.”

“Thank you,” Daniel said.

Hannah’s grip tightened around her son’s shoulder. “What do you want after?”

“Nothing.”

“Nobody wants nothing.”

Daniel looked at her then, directly and without charm.

“I want to go home tonight and not hate myself for walking away from a mother and child who needed help.”

That was not a line Blake would have said. Blake would have smiled. Blake would have leaned close. Blake would have turned kindness into a contract before she even understood the price.

Daniel did none of that.

He simply waited.

Noah tugged Hannah’s sleeve. “Mom, I’m cold.”

That decided it.
