The Paralyzed Crime Boss Hired the Most Chaotic Caregiver in Chicago, but the Night She Refused His Money Changed His Empire Forever

Part 2: “Seeing my patient.”

His legs had already begun to lose muscle. The skin was pale, the knees sharply defined. A red area had formed along the outside of his left calf where pressure from the chair had gone unnoticed.

Sadie touched the skin around it.

“You have an early pressure injury. Your circulation is poor, and that blanket is trapping heat. If I work here, I need to see what I’m treating.”

Damon’s fingers tightened.

“If you break my wrist,” she added, “I won’t be able to transfer you.”

He released her.

No one in the house looked directly at his legs. His guards turned away during transfers. The previous nurses had covered him quickly, as though acknowledging his body might humiliate him.

Sadie examined him with the same practical concentration she might have given a blood pressure cuff.

No pity.

No fear.

No performance.

“You’re hired,” he said.

“Great.”

“Clean the glass before you leave.”

“I’m a nurse, Mr. Callahan, not housekeeping.”

She stood and walked toward the door.

“Tell Frank to bring a broom.”

The door closed behind her.

Sadie leaned against the hallway wall, squeezed her eyes shut, and released the breath she had been holding.

She had gotten the job.

Now she only had to survive it.

The first two weeks were warfare conducted through medical charts.

Damon refused morning stretches.

Sadie opened the curtains at sunrise until the light irritated him into cooperation.

He hid his medication beneath his tongue.

She began checking his mouth like a suspicious dentist.

He demanded whiskey with dinner.

She replaced half of it with iced tea.
