They sent the poorest waitress to mock the deaf mafia boss and watched him choose her instead

Part 2: His answer came slowly.

Because you entered this room and spoke to me as if I were a person. Not a monster. Not a problem. Not someone to pity. A person.

Tessa could not answer.

Outside the room, Brett passed the service door twice, slowing each time.

Inside, Tessa and Salvatore talked with their hands.

About Danny. About the way people raised their voices at Deaf people as if loudness were mercy. About loneliness in crowded rooms. About the strange cruelty of being seen by everyone and understood by almost no one.

By the third Thursday, Tessa found herself looking forward to the private room.

By the fourth, the kitchen had noticed.

And by the fifth, Brett’s failed joke had turned into something poisonous.

The first rumor was small enough to pretend it was not a rumor at all.

Brett said it while reaching for a clipboard near the kitchen pass, loud enough for three servers to hear.

“Funny how a girl who barely speaks to anybody suddenly has so much to say to the richest man in the building.”

Carla laughed.

Tessa kept walking.

The second rumor came after closing.

“Maybe she’s smarter than we thought,” Carla said, wiping down the bar. “Maybe princess found herself a sponsor.”

This time, Owen looked uncomfortable.

Brett noticed and clapped him on the shoulder.

“Relax. It’s a joke.”

But jokes, Tessa knew, were where cruel people hid when they wanted a weapon they could deny holding.

By the end of the week, the staff group chat had changed. Brett posted little comments wrapped in laughing emojis, careful enough not to name anything directly, ugly enough that everyone understood.
