**“Who did this to you?”** The most feared Mafia boss in Chicago asked me that question after my

PART 2:For one second, I forgot how to breathe.

Anthony Rizzo stepped into the foyer wearing the same expensive cologne I still smelled in nightmares. His hair was slicked back, his smile careless, his black coat dusted with snow from the Chicago night.

Then he saw me.

The smile vanished.

“Well,” he said slowly, “there you are.”

My body reacted before my mind did. I stepped backward, but Vincent Moretti’s hand remained around my wrist—not tight, not trapping me.

Steadying me.

Anthony’s eyes dropped to my exposed scars. Annoyance flickered across his face, as if my body had betrayed him by remembering.

“She used to work for me,” he said quickly, turning to Vincent. “Unreliable girl. Dramatic. I hope she hasn’t caused trouble.”

Vincent didn’t look away from me.

“Did he do this?”

My throat closed.

Anthony laughed. “Come on, Vincent. You’re not really taking the word of a maid over mine.”

One of Vincent’s guards shifted.

The sound made Anthony’s smile falter.

I looked down at my wrist, at the scar shaped like a bracelet, and suddenly I saw my daughter’s face. Lily, sleeping in the tiny apartment I could barely afford. Lily, who deserved a mother who stopped being afraid of shadows.

“Yes,” I whispered.

The foyer seemed to freeze.

Anthony’s jaw hardened. “Careful, Grace.”

Vincent finally turned toward him.

“You know her name.”

Anthony blinked.

“You said she was just an unreliable maid.”

No one moved.

Vincent released my wrist gently and stepped between us.

“You came into my home,” he said quietly, “and lied to my face.”
